LLANELLI FIRE STATION

The Brief

We were appointed by Mid & West Wales Fire and Rescue Service to refurbish the existing building and to provide enhanced facilities which would include new bedroom accommodation, community and partnership outlets.

The buildings were to be continually occupied during the works and access had to be maintained for appliance vehicles at all times. The budget was limited but a high quality specification and end result was expected by the client.

The Solution

This project gave us the opportunity to demonstrate our capabilities and experience in the design of a commercial / community building under some difficult circumstances due to the continued occupation of the building.

The project was carefully planned from the outset with attention paid to all aspects of the design including improving the thermal performance of the existing building fabric, provide sprinklers throughout, PV installation and generally to give the existing buildings a more ‘contemporary’ feel.

In association with the M & E Consultants, materials were specified, primarily with green guide A+ rating to ensure that the environmental impact of the building was minimised.  Every effort was made to reduce the energy demand of the building,  before applying any low / zero carbon hardware to the building, in accordance with the accepted Energy Hierarchy regime.

The project was tendered as a JCT Intermediate Contract and administered by ourselves.

The project proved extremely successful with the client very happy with the end results.

The external walls were part covered in insulated render with main elevations being clad in maintenance free coloured panels. The main entrance was given a more emphasis via the use of a glazed mono pitched canopy. Solar louvres were also installed to assist in reducing solar gain to the main elevation. The bedroom accommodation, all with en-suite facilities was finished to a high specification to provide the fire crew with a comfortable and modern environment.

Testimonial

Stephanie Howells - Facilities Manager

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service.

"We are more than pleased with the performance of Phil Lewis and his team.

This is the first contract we have worked on but Phil Lewis understood our requirements and interpreted the brief into a suitable design for an operational self roster crewed fire station.

We would be happy to recommend his services for any refurbishment project in the future.
